How to Detect Signal Insertion Loss and Accurately Diagnose It

Insertion loss (attenuation) is the loss of a signal’s power or strength due to a device inserted within a transmission line, for example optical fiber line. The most common reason for insertion loss is the length of the cabling. Additional causes are inserted devices like poorly fitted cable splitters, connectors, etc.

Why it is important to detect & diagnose insertion loss

Some insertion loss is normal, but if there is too much it is a problem for end-users and operators alike. Insertion loss is typically measured and displayed in decibels (dB). A “good” insertion loss measurement should be a positive (+) number. If your measurements detect a negative number, you need to diagnose where the issue is coming from and troubleshoot it.

Understanding the relationship of the components within a transmission line and understanding the measurement parameters of insertion loss helps technicians accurately assess efficiency and performance. Overall, being able to detect and diagnose insertion loss issues is an essential assessment tool in understanding signal performance.

How to detect & diagnose insertion loss

You can use Hitron’s suite of detection, diagnostic, and monitoring tools to easily detect insertion loss issues and diagnose them. Hitron’s offerings include:

These tools work together to make technicians’ jobs seamless. The CGN-DP3 meter lets you detect insertion loss and diagnose where the issues are coming from. The CSN-01 works in conjunction with the Hitron CGN-DP3 wireless DOCSIS 3.1 meter to communicate its testing results with Hitron’s ProMeter app. With the handheld meters and app, you can visually see accurate diagnostics in real-time. It also allows you to adjust frequency, power levels, parameters and settings via Wi-Fi connection and more from your smartphone or tablet.

Hitron’s tools make it easy to get ahead of issues and avoid unnecessary operational costs down the line by proactively detecting insertion loss issues at installation and diagnosing problems on the spot.

If you’re looking for simple solutions, comprehensive analysis, and simulation tests to empower technicians to troubleshoot the whole home, Hitron has you covered. Looking to learn more about how Hitron’s solutions can help your team of field technicians? Contact us and our team of experts.
