Are you setting up Internet in your home for the first time? Or, upgrading your home network setup? Either way, you need a modem. If you are looking for Wi-Fi, then you need a router, too. On its own, a modem can give you wired Internet access. There are a few different kinds of modems, including cable modems, digital subscriber line (DSL) modems, and dial-up modems.

A spectrum modem is a cable modem that communicates with your ISP as described above. In this instance, it’s likely that your ISP would be Spectrum. But in general, depending on your ISP, you might be renting a Spectrum modem already. But if you are looking to buy your own modem, and you are interested in Spectrum, then you need to make sure it is an approved Spectrum modem. Here are the things you need to look for:

 

Approved Spectrum modem features

Before your identify authorized Spectrum modems, consider what your needs are.

Do you need budget-friendly options? Are you looking for the fastest speeds possible? Wanting more advanced features like voice compatibility? What service plan do you already have, should you upgrade that first? These are things to consider.

After identify and understand your network needs, here are some of the features to look for in approved Spectrum modems:

  • Must be a tested modem model
  • Ranges from top download and upload speeds between 60 Mbps – 1Gbps
  • Have passed Spectrum’s full performance certification testing
  • Are all at least DOCSIS 3.0 modems, some are DOCSIS 3.1 modems
  • Offer a range of download and upload channels (8×4, 16×4, 24×8, 32×8)
  • Telephone capability (VoIP)
  • Wi-Fi capability (as a combination modem/router device)

These are high-level features. If you want to buy a different modem or device and use Spectrum services with it, you have to make sure that the equipment is certified to work on the Spectrum network. If Spectrum is your ISP, you may be limited to the approved Spectrum products like Hitron’s CODA cable modem with DOCSIS 3.1 technology.
