What’s required to be an approved xfinity modem?

Learn > Cable Modem & Routers > What’s required to be an approved xfinity modem?

When setting up your home Internet network, you need two things: a modem and a router. Well, you need the router if you want wireless Internet. On its own, a modem can give you wired Internet access. However, the two devices pair well together. A modem and router communicate with one another to get data from your Internet service provider (ISP) to your devices. They are the middlemen. We cover more about routers in other articles on our Learn page, but this page is about the modem. Specifically, looking at an Xfinity modem.

First, there are a few different kinds of modems: cable modems, digital subscriber line (DSL) modems, and dial-up modems.

An Xfinity modem is a cable modem that communicates with your ISP as described above. Depending on your ISP, you might be renting an Xfinity modem already. But if you are looking to buy your own modem, and you are interested in Xfinity, then you need to make sure it is an approved Xfinity modem. Here are the things you need to look for:

Approved Xfinity Modem Features

First, you need to identify what your needs are so that you choose the right device for those needs. For example, do you need something that is the best value for your dollar? Are you looking for advanced features like voice compatibility? Wireless modem? Fastest download and upload speeds? These are things to consider.

Once you identify your needs, here are some of the features to look for in approved Xfinity modems:

  • Are all at least DOCSIS 3.0 modems, some are DOCSIS 3.1 modems
  • Offer a range of download and upload channels (8×4, 16×4, 24×8, 32×8)
  • Telephone capability (VoIP)
  • Wi-Fi capability (as a combination modem/router device)

These are high-level features. If you want to buy a different modem or device and use Xfinity services with it, you have to make sure that the equipment is certified to work on the Xfinity network. That’s the beauty of using cable modem like the ones that Hitron offers. Hitron has versatile solutions to meet your needs for various ISPs.
